Become a Government and Strategic Policy Advisor - Temporary Assignment up to 12 Months with MPAC

You are a detail-oriented individual who can support engagement with government officials, agencies and other stakeholders to advance, recommend and advocate for legislative and regulatory changes; to provide strategic policy advice, research support and critical insights on emerging policy issues to Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).

You have: 

  • Completion of relevant post-secondary education in public policy administration, political science, social sciences, public affairs or related field
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience advancing public policy in consultation with government officials, industry stakeholders and internal teams
  • Demonstrated experience researching and monitoring government activity, including proposed legislation, policies, public consultation and strategic initiatives
  • Working knowledge of the legislative framework governing Ontario’s property assessment and taxation system, including the Assessment Act, Municipal Property Assessment Act 1997, Municipal Act 2001, City of Toronto Act 2006, and other related regulations
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to create briefing materials, reports and presentations that communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively
  • Effective research and analytical skills to identify issues and problems, synthesize complex information, and formulate actionable recommendations
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, while ensuring that policy and legislative objectives are met in a timely manner
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of applications

 

What you will do:

  • Provide policy support and advice to MPAC senior management, internal staff and project teams, government ministries, municipalities, municipal associations, taxpayers, professional associations, private sector and other assessment jurisdictions
  • Conduct research and review of established and proposed assessment policies to develop options, determine feasibility, measure impact, and provide recommendations to senior management and government
  • Research emerging policy issues and provide recommendations related to impact on MPAC’s business
  • Support the development of government legislation on proposed legislative changes and regulatory provisions necessary to implement property assessment and tax reform, and ongoing government initiatives
  • Research and prepare briefing material and correspondence for approval by the President and CAO and senior management
  • Participate in and provide government, public affairs and public policy advice to corporate project teams and committees
  • Manage assessment legislation and policy-related projects, including planning, research, assembly of project team members, and preparation of business cases
  • Support the Manager in the development and maintenance of workplans and timelines to ensure organizational alignment to meet the needs of government stakeholders
  • Engage directly with Ontario Ministry of Finance staff, other ministries, agencies and stakeholders on policy and legislation issue
